For this unique project, each Lummi Island Community Land Trust homeowner participated in building their own home to lower their down payment and create community. With four years of planning and nearly two years of building, this five-acre development resulted in nine homes. Common Ground helped the organization navigate through numerous challenges. For instance, the site was located in protected wetlands. So, we worked with Lummi Island CLT to ensure the delicate ecosystem would be permanently shielded from development or pollution while simultaneously completing these affordable homes. Also, we assisted in educating the homeowners on stewardship and establishing long-term safeguards to guarantee the safety of the land for generations.
