The Makah Tribal Housing Department lists 63 low-income families currently homeless and/or living in overcrowded situations. This region had been unable to meet the housing needs of its residents for over 15 years. So, we teamed up with the Makah Housing Authority to conduct the initial feasibility work for what will become the Sail River Heights Subdivision, a two-phased project, which will lead to the creation of 79 new homes. Sail River Heights is located on the Makah Reservation. The site was chosen primarily because of its elevation above the tsunami zone. We began planning for the Sail River Heights Subdivision with the tribe in 2007. It was a coordinated effort involving community residents in a variety of activities to gather input on tribal housing needs, to obtain feedback, and direction on the type of housing the Tribe should consider building to address the needs of its members. Construction of the first 20-homes will be completed in fall of 2012.
