San Juan Community Home Trust found that owning a home in the San Juan Islands was practically impossible for most of the county’s residents.  So, in 2002, they came to Common Ground for help with their first project, developing the Salal Neighborhood in Friday Harbor.  To bring the homes into fruition, we utilized a diverse array of funding, including community fundraising, private financing, and Washington State Housing Trust Fund.  We also kept costs low by bringing in volunteer architects and contractors and utilizing custom-designed factory-built modular housing.  The houses are clustered in three pods, with each pod clustered around a common open space area.  And even though the Salal Neighborhood is outside the historic district, we worked with the Friday Harbor Historic Preservation Review Board to ensure the architectural design of the homes was in keeping with the character of Friday Harbor.  San Juan Community Home Trust ensures only home buyers who earn less than 80% of the County’s median income can call the Salal Neghiborhood home.
